AT&T Smart Cities

I led the research, user experience, visual design, and development of the AT&T Smart Cities Operations Center—a centralized, real-time dashboard designed for civic leaders to monitor and manage urban infrastructure. This platform brought together data from diverse IoT sources across city systems, transforming it into actionable insights that improved operational visibility and supported better decision-making. By integrating design and technology, the solution provided a scalable, future-forward tool for smarter, more responsive city management.

OverView

The AT&T Smart City Operations Center empowers city leaders with a holistic view of urban operations by aggregating, analyzing, and visualizing real-time data from a wide range of IoT-connected infrastructure. Designed with the needs of mayors and civic leaders in mind, the dashboard provides a customizable, high-definition interface that simplifies complex data and supports faster, more informed decision-making across public services such as transportation, safety, lighting, waste, water, and environmental monitoring.

The Challenge

Cities are increasingly adopting smart infrastructure, but the technology landscape is fragmented. IoT devices and data systems vary significantly in terms of format, connectivity, and utility. Civic leaders require a unified solution that integrates disparate systems, aggregates real-time data, and converts it into actionable insights. Many organizations also still rely on outdated legacy systems, making integration and usability even more difficult. Key challenges: • Aggregating data across various IoT platforms with inconsistent connection protocols • Real-time analysis and AI-powered insights that evolve over time • Visualizing complex data streams in a way that is intuitive and easy to understand • Ensuring usability for non-technical civic leaders through a customizable, high-definition dashboard

The Solution

Developed a modular, vendor-agnostic operations dashboard that integrates with a broad spectrum of IoT devices and legacy systems. The platform uses AI to analyze real-time data and deliver predictive insights. With a user-centered design approach, the interface was tailored for ease of use by city officials at all technical levels. The dashboard enables leaders to: • Monitor key services in real-time • Automate responses and alerts • Customize data views by department or need • Integrate legacy systems alongside newer IoT solutions Extensive research—including interviews with mayors, IT leaders, and civic organizations—ensured the design reflected real operational needs. Miami was selected as the pilot city for initial implementation and feedback.

The Result

The Miami-Dade pilot of the AT&T Smart Cities Operations Center demonstrated clear improvements in operational efficiency, public safety responsiveness, and cross-departmental collaboration. While specific public metrics remain confidential, key outcome areas included: • Faster incident response times, with real-time data enabling officials to detect and address traffic accidents, infrastructure issues, and emergencies more rapidly. • Expanded data integration, with a growing number of IoT data streams—from lighting and water services to aviation and public safety—feeding into the centralized dashboard. • Enhanced collaboration across departments, evidenced by an increase in cross-functional alerts and coordinated responses. • Higher transparency and public trust, supported by the availability of data visualizations, dashboards, and reporting that helped inform residents and stakeholders. • Increased civic engagement, with improved communication and responsiveness leading to greater community participation in forums and feedback channels. • Operational efficiency, seen in reductions in duplicate service requests and overlapping work orders. • Improved infrastructure uptime, as proactive maintenance became possible through better monitoring of connected systems. As a result of the pilot’s success, the City of Miami became the first paying customer of the platform and continues to serve as a testbed for ongoing improvements. The project stands as a leading example of how centralized, real-time visibility can transform city operations and strengthen community trust through smart, data-informed governance.
